Help plan our el Dia de Los Muertos celebration…

ofrenda de frida kahlo

El dia de los Muertos has been an annual fall gathering for Little Artshram and friends in the Traverse City community for the past several years. We have adapted this traditional Mexican holiday to our Mid-western needs of honoring our ancestors that have passed before us and also as a means to express our gratitude for the abundance and creativity in our lives. We’ve been invited to host this event at the Art Center of  TC on Saturday, November  4th, from 5- 8 PM. We would have various activities before hand—–perhaps workshops during the day from 11-3PM :

  • Skeleton puppet and mask making
  • Family Offrenda’s
  • Sugar Skulls and Food prep?  Traditional dishes, like empandas?

The evening events could be divided up thusly:

  • 5:00-6:00—Meet, greet and share ancestor blessings of some sort, through storytelling, viewing the offrendas…
  • 6:00-6:30—Some kind of procession of our Skeleton puppets and masks
  • 6:30-8:00—Potluck Feasting, drumming, dancing…

The usual fee, for workshops/event is sliding scale fee of $5 per person/or $15 per family. Little A supplies the beverages and we ask everyone to bring a dish to pass. Could you  be a part of the planning and organizing for this gathering?  Do you know anyone else who may want to get involved? Tasks beforehand:

  •  Meeting at least once or twice at the Art Center to divide up tasks.
  • Connecting with other groups/schools that may want to participate/help host (Local school Spanish classes/St. Michaels’ Church in Suttons Bay?)
  • Getting information on our webpage and flyers out and advertising.
  • Helping host/teach the workshops held during the day at the Art Center.

ANNOUNCING! A Pig Press Release:

With the upcoming YEAR OF PIG approaching, we are once again designing a one of a kind, Mid-West/Chinese New Year calendar as our annual, fund-raiser for Little Artshram. The calendar sales (which will be available November 15th) go directly into the cost of designing and printing the calendar– and the Little Artshram Scholarship Fund for our Summer Art-Farm Programs.

As we enter into Pig Year, we will honor, gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of our rooting friend, and, the lessons this wise creature offers us in year 2007. We invite you to participate by submitting photos, stories, poems, songs from your own pig experiences.

You may email, penny@littleartshram.org or snail mail your submissions,
