2007 Earth Day Mask Making and Storytelling Workshops

For 10 years, Little Artshram has been conducting residencies in public and private schools and community centers throughout Northern and Mid-Michigan. In 2005 Penny Krebiehl, Little Artshram’s founder and Artistic Director, received recognition by the Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council as Environmental Educator of the Year in the Grand Traverse region. This award was directed toward Little Artshram’s devoted work in organizing and implementing the annual Earth Day Parade and Celebration and Community Art Studio in the five-county Grand Traverse area. Dede Alderman of Rhythmic Adventures joined our Little Artshram teaching staff in 2003 and adds the lively element of music-making through drumming and song.

Beginning in January through March, and in preparation for Earth Day 2007, we will focus on the “idea “of nature, as our theme and are currently offering one-day, to one-two week-long workshops in basic mask design and recycled art construction. Our workshops are focused on blending art and music-making with performance and environmental education. Your participants can learn specific skills such as storytelling, mask-making, and build musical instruments out of recycled items.

We are Nature Working
Mask making & Storytelling Workshop

Explore the old art of mask-making in the new world order….Nestled inside during the winter months we turn inward and explore the idea of nature, how we humans conceive of it, and the ways we connect ourselves to it…through art making, story and song.

With Little Artshram Puppet and Mask Theater learn the garbage-art method of building a nature inspired mask that speaks in extra-ordinary ways and comes alive with a lively and fun impromptu drumming and storytelling performance.

Bring your stories, poems, and any found natural (or otherwise) objects that will inspire you , and, that you might want to incorporate into your mask. Participants are led through the entire process –from scripting to design and construction of masks, garbage-art instruments, basic rhythmic and drumming, and finally to a brief rehearsal and performance!

Workshop Presenters: Penny Krebiehl and DeDe Alderman
